The Variety 4WD Adventure is Calling

There are some trips that are all about the destination, and others where the journey is the whole point. The 2026 Variety 4WD Adventure promises both.

From 3-13 November 2026, a convoy of Adventurers will head off on a 10-day journey from South Australia’s Clare Valley into the spectacular Flinders Ranges, before crossing back through the outback and finishing in St George, Queensland. Along the way: rugged station tracks, dramatic lookouts, ancient landscapes, remote touring and the kind of scenery best experienced from behind the wheel of a 4WD.

For drivers who love getting off the bitumen and into Australia’s more scenic corners, this is Variety – the Children’s Charity of Queensland’s off-road motoring event. Unlike the Variety Bash, which is known for its classic car requirements, the Variety 4WD Adventure is open to a much broader range of vehicles. There are no age-based eligibility rules for the vehicle you bring – the main requirement is simple: it must be a 4WD with low range.

And for anyone who’s always wanted to tackle an organised off-road event but hasn’t done one before, newcomers are very much welcome.

The 2026 route begins in one of Australia’s best-known wine regions before heading north into Bendleby Ranges and the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. From there, Adventurers will take in some of the region’s most iconic scenery, including Razorback Lookout, Wilpena Pound and more, before making their way through outback Queensland. A stop at Charlotte Plains, famous for its artesian hot baths and expansive night skies, is set to be another highlight of the journey.

It’s this balance of challenge, scenery and camaraderie that gives the Variety 4WD Adventure its appeal. The route is built for people who enjoy proper touring – the sort of trip where low range gets used, the landscapes keep changing and every day brings a new section of country to explore. Depending on terrain and access, Adventurers can generally expect around five to six hours of driving a day, broken up with lunch stops, photo opportunities and time to take in the surroundings.

Just as importantly, Adventurers don’t have to take on the logistics alone. Variety handles the route planning and coordinates accommodation options at overnight stops where possible, with a mix of campsites and motel-style accommodation depending on the location. The event also travels with a dedicated team of officials to support participants and keep things running smoothly, including medics, a scout who checks each day’s route is safe and passable, and operational crew on hand throughout the journey. Full medical and mechanical support is part of the experience, giving Adventurers peace of mind as they tackle some of Australia’s most stunning and remote country.
