Frequently Asked Questions

Variety will pay suppliers directly based on invoices submitted during the application. This helps ensure funding is used exactly for the approved item or service.

Individual Grants are capped at $10,000. Community Grants are capped at $15,000. Queensland state and special schools may also apply for up to $5,000 in discretionary funding, submitted as a separate application.

Individual Grants fund essential items that help children and their families access the care, resources and support they need to thrive. This includes medical and mobility equipment, communication devices, educational tools, technology and sensory resources – including practical items not covered by the NDIS.

Community Grants support schools, not-for-profits and community groups through grants that strengthen programs and environments for children who need it most. Community grants can include funding for inclusive education resources, mobility and therapy equipment, assistive technology and sensory or recreational tools that create more accessible, supportive spaces for kids. Private organisations are not eligible to apply.

Other grants that we offer include Bikes for Kids, EduKids and Wigs for Kids.

Applications can be made for children and young people aged 0 to 17 years who are sick, experiencing disadvantage or living with disabilities in Queensland.

Individual Grant applications may be submitted by parents or carers. Community Grant applications may be submitted by eligible schools or organisations supporting children.

Variety considers the level of need, the impact on the child or children, and how the request improves wellbeing, independence, inclusion, or future opportunities. Applications are also assessed against eligibility, documentation, and funding priorities.

Applications are reviewed by the Kids Support team and then considered by committees and the Board. The full process may take up to 12 to 16 weeks. All applicants will receive written notification of the outcome.

Required documents may include financial information, quotes for requested items, and supporting documentation from appropriate professionals. Individual Grant applications require three quotes and professional confirmation of need where applicable.

If you are unsure, please review our guidelines. If you need clarification or have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].

Variety does not fund items covered by NDIS unless you can provide evidence that funding has been sought and was unsuccessful.

No. Variety does not provide retrospective funding for items or services that have already been paid for prior to approval.

Individuals must wait at least six months after receiving a grant before applying again. Organisations and schools must wait at least twelve months between Community Grant applications.

If approved, Variety will request an updated invoice with Variety billing details and arrange payment directly with the supplier. Grant invoices must be submitted to Variety within three months of approval.

Successful applicants will be asked to complete a short impact survey approximately three months after receiving the grant.

Please refer to our grant guidelines for a list of ineligible items, which vary depending on the type of grant. If you need clarification or have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].
