When Queensland’s summer heat arrives, most of us reach for a fan or turn on the air conditioning. For 15-year-old Ryder, staying cool isn’t just about comfort – it’s essential for his health, wellbeing and quality of life.
Ryder lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and uses a powerchair during the day or remains in bed. The condition affects his ability to regulate his body temperature, meaning even a hot day can leave him exhausted, irritable and unable to concentrate. As his condition has progressed, he has also developed restrictive lung disease, making clean, filtered air increasingly important.
Despite years of trying to find a solution, Ryder’s mum Jayde was left without support after her request for funding was declined by the NDIS. As a single mum and full-time carer, Jayde simply couldn’t afford the cost herself.
Thanks to a Variety grant, Ryder received air conditioning with an air purifier in both his bedroom and the family living area. It means Ryder will finally have a safe, comfortable environment where he can rest, spend time with family and better manage the challenges of Queensland’s climate.
“I was so excited. I could cry,” Jayde shared. “We’ve tried to put wet towels on him to keep him cool. As a single mum, I don’t have many funds coming in anymore. It’s going to be such a relief for him in summertime.”
While government funding plays an important role for many children living with disabilities, it doesn’t always meet every child’s needs.
